The Garbage Puyo retains its functions from the Blowfish.
The Blowfish item is replaced by the Garbage Puyo, which was in the Japanese version of the vanilla game. Beating a mission on Expert difficulty will grant an additional star. As for the other missions, Pursuit and Battle Race will give two stars (defeating the tank for one star, and defeating it while it is still attacking for two stars for the former, finishing the race for one star and defeating all opponents for two stars for the latter) while the rest of the missions give one star each. For example, to get a three-star rank in Race and Boost Race missions, the player must finish in either in 3rd for one star, 2nd for two stars and 1st for three stars. 
The way to get stars is similar to Team Sonic Racing's way of collecting stars, no matter the difficulty it is played in.
Most missions in World Tour have been made easier to beat. Professor Asobin, an old mascot of Sega (albeit redesigned), replaces Ristar as the flagman. Futaba Sakura, from Persona 5, appears as the new announcer and commentator for this game. The Sumo Digital logos in OutRun Bay have also changed to the current logo of the studio. The Sega and Sumo Digital logos are now changed to the ones that were previously featured in Team Sonic Racing. The console exclusive characters are also playable from the start. The new characters can be unlocked in the Shop, complete with Sega Miles returning. Every character from the preceding games are now playable from the start.
